glossopharyngeal nerve: This nerve receives sensory fibers from parts of the tongue, tonsils and pharynx.
 
glycoproteins: These are produced by the mucous cells of the glands and are used for moistening and lubricating functions of saliva.
 
hilium: A depression of the salivary glands where blood vessels and nerves enter the glands.
